Play-Reading in Association with the Fringe

ESU Facilitator: Dr Mike Ingham

The Play this time: “Noises Off” by Michael Frayn

A classic play within a play, Frayn¡’s 1982 Noises Off has sometimes been described as one of the craziest farces ever put on the stage. The play recounts the misadventures of a third-rate British theatre troupe as they tour a sex farce titled “Nothing On” in provincial theatres. In theatre terminology, “noises off” refers to offstage sound effects. In this case, the noises off are the backstage noises of the actors who are entangled in a sex farce of their own. In Act One, the cast and crew stumble through a catastrophic final rehearsal of the first act of “Nothing On” as the clock passes midnight. Hampered by wayward plates of sardines, broken doors, a lost contact lens and their general lack of talent, they lamely carry on for their wearily sarcastic director. The silly plot seems to involve a ditzy maid in an English country house, where one couple plans an illicit affair, another couple hides from the tax collector, and a drunken burglar and an Arab sheik complicate the action. In the first act, the audience sees the show from the front, as it is rehearsed on the night before it opens. We witness the second a ct from backstage, but still hear what is happening onstage in a muddled performance. The third and final act again puts us in front of the curtain. Much of the comedy emerges from the subtle variations in each version as off-stage chaos affects on-stage performance, with a great deal of slapstick. The contrast between players’ on-stage and off-stage personalities is also a source of comic discord.

Do come and join us. Everyone who wishes to participate in the play-reading will have the opportunity to do so.

Toastmasters International (TI) is a non-profit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills.

Whether you are a professional or a student, Toastmasters is the best place to improve your communication and leadership skills.

Lose the fear of speaking in public! Learn public speaking skills and gain confidence to speak to an audience. Learn to be an active listener and provide constructive feedback to others.

Leadership cannot be learned in a day. It takes practice. At Toastmasters, members build leadership skills by organizing and conducting meetings and motivating others to help them. Just as Toastmasters members learn to speak simply by speaking, they learn leadership by leading. At Toastmasters, learn to speak like Churchill and lead like Ghandi
